Holstebro is a beautiful city filled with art and cultural experiences

Art & Culture

Art takes up a lot of space in Holstebro town. And not just in the museums - you'll also find it outside in the streets. It all started in 1966 with the Giacometti sculpture "Woman On Cart" - colloquially Maren o æ woun - which today is the symbol of the town. At the newly restored manor Nørre Vosborg, culture will unfold right in front of your eyes with, amongst others, storyteller festivals, theatre and exhibitions. Nørre Vosborg also functions as a museum with the fine old manor rooms, and an exhibition in Nordladen. At Hjerl Hedes Frilandsmuseum, you can experience the old Danish village with workshops, bakery, stone age settlement, etc. During the summer peak season and during advent weekends, Hjerl Hedes Frilandsmuseum sizzles with activity. There are many exciting museums in Holstebro Municipality, including Holstebro Museum and Holstebro Art Museum, Jens Nielsen & Olivia Holm Møller Museet and the Stranding Museum St. George.

The good stories

The area in and around Holstebro is full of funny, exciting and curious stories, such as pilgrimages, guided tours of Holstebro town with the Culture Night Watchmen or the town's guide corps, guided tours at the Folk University Centre Skærum Mølle, and Limfjord tales about life by the fjord. The latest addition is HER VAR ENGANG (Once Upon A Time)... Odin Teatret, together with local historians, storytellers and children, arranges a monthly afternoon meet with stories, music, coffee and cake at special places. Follow it at Odin Teatret's website. You should also visit Fortælle Galleriet (The Storytelling Gallery), an exhibition space driven by artists in the heart of Holstebro, where the oral story meets contemporary national and international visual art. Fortælle Galleriet is open every Friday from 2pm to 6pm.

Culture For Children

Culture For Children

At Hjerl Hedes Frilandsmuseum, you can experience an old Danish village with, amongst other things, a stone age settlement, a steam sawmill and a bakery. Try out old games on the historic playground. Usually a hit with the children is the toy exhibition at Holstebro Museum - an exhibition showing dolls, tin toys and more from 1845-1970.

Puzzling branch knots, dried up carrions, widgets in iron and plastic, and preserved animals are just some of the things that children and adults can experience and wonder about in Undrekammeret (the wonder chamber) below Holstebro Art Museum

At the library, you can also borrow a culture backpack and go explore Holstebro. Choose between: Art Tour of Holstebro, Culture-Historical Tour of Holstebro with exciting stories, and a Combined Art and Culture-Historical Tour around Vandkraftsøen. You can get a paint packet to go with it, which contains equipment for drawing and painting so that you can do paintings along the way.
